Senior Resources

For the Newly Retired:

You may have been planning your retirement for years. But when the time comes to make the transition from life with a regular paycheck to living on a fixed income, there are many decisions to make.

Where do you want to live?  Where can you afford to live, particularly in the current environment where investments have decreased in value?  Are your investments as wisely planned as possible?  Do you have the insurance you need, such as long term care?  Are your will, trust and other legal arrangements in order?  If you move, who can help plan all the details, help you prepare your home and sell it?  And who can assist you in finding a new home, or refer you to a reputable REALTOR® in the area where you plan to move?

For Late Life Transitions:

Making the transition to an assisted living facility can be a challenging time for everyone involved.  The decision can come as life in your existing home becomes too challenging to manage, or can be precipitated by a specific event for you or your partner.  Sometimes you may not be able to make the necessary decisions at this time and family members are far away.  Who can come in to make an assessment of you needs?  What are the best facilities in the area available to meet those needs?  How will the move be made affordable?  Will your current home need to be sold to finance the new one?

Whatever comes next for you, this site offers resources to assist you with your plans or decisions.

Financial Planners:

Although you may have an existing plan, when the time comes to retire, it is important to review what you have and how you will be able to use it.  If you are selling your home, you will need to understand the implications of the sale.  If you buy again, you may be able to take your tax base with you.  Or you may have capital gains questions.  You most certainly should have advice about how to maximize your returns.  Here are the names of some advisors who can help you:

AGING IN PLACE

Many seniors prefer to age in place, staying in their existing homes, or downsizing to a smaller one.  There are many options for those who make this choice, from Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) to simply staying in one’s own home with assistance from friends, family or paid care givers.  Here are some information sources:

Senior living communities:

If you have made the decision to move to a senior community, there are several different options, offering different levels of care.  Each is described below:

Independent Living

These are private apartments with housekeeping services.  Transportation and communal meals are available.  They might allow care givers who would be privately hired but not live-in.

1499 Sutter St.
San Francisco, CA 94109

Continuing and Life Care Communities

These are residences that are purchased by seniors of 65 years or older. There is generally an application or processing fee and monthly fees. They offer both independent units and assisted living and skilled nursing as the need arises. This is the most expensive residence plan for seniors. Some may have an upper age and/or health requirement at admission

Assisted Living
Assisted Living communities provide personal care, meals, medical management and any other “assistance with daily living” a senior may require.  The population may be frail, although sometimes there are more independent residents who know that they will require more help later on.   Most of these communities maintain several levels of care, including Alzheimer units and residents will be charged according to their needs.
